When booking a cruise holiday, there are plenty of factors to consider from the itineraries to what entertainment is on offer on the ship. Now, one seasoned travel agent has revealed the common mistakes she’s seen people make time and time again – especially among first-time passengers.

Michelle Kirkham has worked at TUI for 38 years as a Retail Manager, helping thousands of Brits plan their holidays including on TUI’s Marella Cruises. When it comes to cruise holidays, according to Michelle there’s one misconception that can cause people to be looking at the wrong options.

“The biggest error people make is choosing purely based on price,” the travel pro explained. “A cheaper deal isn’t always better if it doesn’t match what you want from your holiday. The secret is picking the right ship and experience first.”

She added: “You spend most of your time onboard, so the ship really shapes your holiday. Whether you want something relaxed, family friendly or adults only, that choice makes all the difference.”

One example is choosing your cabin, especially if it’s your first cruise and you’re not sure exactly what you’re after. Michelle recommended: “If your budget allows, go for a balcony cabin. It gives you space, privacy and those incredible sea views. It really elevates your first cruise.”

Of course that doesn’t mean you need to splurge, but Michelle warned Brits to pay attention to what is included, so they don’t face any nasty surprises when they board their ship. She explained: “Your accommodation, main meals and entertainment are covered, but things like drinks packages, excursions and WiFi can cost extra. Planning for that upfront makes everything stress-free.”

Typically, cruise lines can open bookings from as early as up to two years before a sailing – and cruise insiders have previously suggested that booking 12-18 months in advance can often get you some of the best value deals in terms of dates and cabins. However, on the flip side there are also plenty of tempting deals to be found if you leave it a few weeks before, so if you’re happy to be flexible on dates and itinerary, then it could be worth trying your luck and booking somewhat spontaneously too.

If you’ve never been on a cruise before, Michelle recommends looking at a Mediterranean itinerary, such as Marella’s Highlights of the Mediterranean. “It’s got real bucket list appeal,” she said. “You’re seeing some of Europe’s most famous destinations in one holiday, with minimal sea days, so there’s always something to explore. It’s a brilliant introduction to cruising.”

And while cruise holidays did use to be quite formal affairs, nowadays the experience is a lot more relaxed (although there are still formal nights where dressing up is optional for those who do want a bit of glitz and glamour!).

“First-time cruisers are often put off by outdated myths, when the reality is completely different,” Michelle added. “People still think cruises are formal, old-fashioned or just for older travellers, but modern ships are like floating resorts. There’s something for everyone, whether you want relaxation, adventure or a lively atmosphere.”
